Commonly asked Rigid PCB Fabrication questions.

Q: What files are needed to fabricate my board?
A: Gerber files in 274x format. (274D with proper aperture list)
-Excellon drill file(s)
-Fabrication specifications-include drill sizes, types (plated or non-plated), tolerances, board dimensions with a datum hole measuring to the edge X and Y.

Q: How much copper clearance is needed from the board edge?
A: Milling requires .015 copper clearances. Scoring requires .020 copper clearances

Q: What is the best way to assure via hole integrity given the variety of surface finishes available and the numerous ways designers approach solder mask coverage?
A: Fully open or fully closed. Nothing in between. Tenting vias, on one or both sides , with LPI most often leaves a hole partially covered, the result is a great place for contamination to collect during the application of the final finish. Either totally plug the via with a suitable material or encroach the mask on the pad, leaving the hole totally open.
